Project Description
"Deserted Beach
Among sand castles
Broken shells"
This haiku creates a lonely feeling. A cold beach in the winter where only the rare lost soul would roam. The experience of wealth and elegance overcome by the bitterness that comes with it -- the castles and broken shells beneath them.
The overall goal was to find a contrast between rich, intentional materials and deserted beach fragments. I chose to incorporate a light colored, unfinished cement block to look like it's been worn by the environment. Then, I used a more dull sheet of ribbed metal as well as a piece of frosted glass to add some extra hardness to the palette and to evoke a cold, foggy feeling. My choices of upholstery to show the coziness of a winter beach day included both a taupe and cream velvet, a tan knit carpet sample, and some white woven polyester. A white sheer fabric was used to create the effect of a light breeze.
Within my found objects, I wanted to create a sense of delicacy with some brittle driftwood, broken twigs, dried beach flowers, and a jar of sand. For some rougher objects of the environment, I included some coarse seashells and some weathered beach rocks and glass. The haiku was written on a vintage piece of paper and wrapped in rope, hidden between the rocks for the next person to find.
The hopes were to create areas of contrast throughout the palette–harsh vs. delicate, cold vs. warm, and high-end vs. affordable.
