Project Description
My group and I were tasked with creating sustainable design solutions for the Ohio State University campus based on user research. Using a variety of research tactics, we found some very interesting insights that fueled our design insertion ideas. We developed five different design strategies to incorporate throughout our process and use as pillars of our concept.
Each of us focused on creating an insertion to support our pillars of sustainability, mine being Insertion #4, an outdoor solar panel seating area. This insertion can be found at the bottom of the page below my group members. The Block O shaped grove is located on the eastern section of the South Oval, incorporating buckeye leaf solar trees providing energy to power banks throughout the grove. It includes nine solar trees, amphitheater seating, an amphitheater stage, and four 32' long built-in, biophilic seating areas. The space allows visitors to connect with the university while also connecting with the planet.

Strategy 1 - Encourage Sustainable Behavior Through Incentives
-Incentivize sustainable behavior by offering rewards to students
-Create experiential moments for emotional incentivization
-Make sustainability a fun activity for students to incorporate daily
Strategy 2 - Connect the Thread Between People and Planet
-Make sustainable actions a pivotal part of everyday life at tOSU
-Connect the minds of the OSU population to their environmental impact
Strategy 3 - Expand Access to Education on Sustainability
-Create accessibility to knowledge for anybody, anywhere
-Connect different majors to sustainability through university-wide curriculum shifts
-Inform students on their individual environmental footprint and impact
Strategy 4 - Reduce Carbon Footprint Through Renewable Energy
-Combine outdoor seating with renewable energy power sources
-Utilize solar panels throughout campus to provide energy
Strategy 5 - Make Sustainability Beautiful
-Draw attention to aesthetically pleasing sustainable insertions
-Create “Instagrammable” moments and experiences on campus
-Make the connection between the idea of sustainability and the idea of a more beautiful campus
Final Deliverables
Insertion #1 - Ohio State Sustainability App
The Ohio State Sustainability app aims to create a culture of sustainability on campus by providing tools, information, and incentives to inspire and motivate students and faculty.

Insertion #2 - Buckeye Bins
This section of the app is to be used when returning reusable containers from the dining hall to any “Buckeye Bin” machine around campus. When a bin is returned to the machine, a code will appear and this will be typed in on the app in order to gain points and receive rewards. This encourages students to reduce waste and be rewarded by their sustainable action.

Insertion #3 - Buckeye Wheels
The ”Buckeye Wheels” section of the app allows for students to track their bike ride and miles. When a ride is complete, the bike logs their miles and they redeem points for a reward. It encourages students to ride bikes to their location rather than driving a car.

Insertion #4 - Solar Panel Seating Area
The Block O shaped grove is located on the eastern section of the South Oval, incorporating buckeye leaf solar trees providing energy to power banks throughout the grove. It includes nine solar trees, amphitheater seating, an amphitheater stage, and four 32' long built-in, biophilic seating areas. The space allows visitors to connect with the university while also connecting with the planet.
